The Arc of East Central Iowa’s office building sustained extensive damage and will require major renovation. In addition, they lost many supplies to operate their summer day and other program.

The harsh, snowy winter started it; then the continual rain that occurred to the north and came down to Cedar Rapids in April, May and early June created a disaster that will not be forgotten. The staff placed sandbags around the doors to protect the property but the water blasted through the bags and rushed into The Arc. The building, along with hundreds of others, was filled with raw sewage and river water. It destroyed thousands of dollars of materials, food, games and other program items that had just been purchased for summer day program.

break area that doubled as program space for the Choice and Group Respite programs. The elevator was totally underwater.

The Arc is temporarily located at several sites and open for business, limited only by their physical resources and imaginations.

In the meantime they are in need of items to keep their programs running. Donations of board games, sensory items, games, puzzles, craft supplies, books, musical instruments, pots and pans, cooking utensils, bakeware, paper towels, wet wipes, paper plates, plastic cups, latex and non-latex gloves, bottled juice and non-perishable snack food items (i.e. peanut butter, crackers, granola bars, etc.) are needed
