New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg hosted a reception Aug. 15 honoring the 17th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The annual event, attended by hundreds of people, took place under a huge tent on the back lawn of Gracie Mansion overlooking the Hudson River. A tremendous milestone in the history of civil rights, the ADA opened the door to millions of Americans with disabilities, said Bloomberg. Tonight, we honor some organizations that continue to build on that great achievement and help more people with disabilities succeed in every sphere of city life. People with disabilities continue to make major contributions to our economic, cultural and civic life both in New York City and throughout the world. Our Administration wants to make sure that all New Yorkers can enjoy everything this great city has to offer. Commissioner of the Mayors Office for People with Disabilities Matthew Sapolin presented awards recognizing individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to increasing accessibility for people with disabilities. Today, as we have done in the past, the Mayor and I are granting awards to recipients who share this admin-istrations commitment to bettering the lives of people with disabilities, said Sapolin. The recipients, through their actions, have demonstrated their dedication to the benefits provided by the Americans with Disabilities Act. |
